This Spring, Flirt With Hot Colors

Don't let your spring wardrobe get stuck in a rut. Fashion doesn't need to eccentric or complicated in order to look up-to-date. One way to do so is combining bright colors into your wardrobe.

But some of the hottest colors for this spring may make some people wary about fitting them into their personal styles.

Like with umbrellas, the most chic colors right now include bright yellow, traffic-cone orange, kelly green, hot pink, bright blue, purple and timeless, stark white.

While I've definitely been a witness to at least two different women in Hoboken sporting matching-colored umbrellas and pants, (albeit they were friends), I don't know that many others would publicly advocate this choice of style. I tried to use my phone to snag a photo of the two, to prove that they weren't 5 year-old twins, but fearing they were onto me, I was forced to making a pretend phone call.

It was a commendable effort on their parts nonetheless. But matching substantial elements of one's outfit can be a bit overwhelming and if you follow this season's trends, you'll know that mix-matching rather, is one of the season's main themes.

The most popular way Hobokenites are incorporating bright colors into their wardrobes is with pants. More specifically, casual cropped pants, riding pants, trousers and denims that all have clean lines, minimal pockets, straight and monochromatic stitching, and hardly any embellishments.

Any pant with distracting details—like too many pockets of varying sizes, oversized buttons, wavy stitching, etc—can take away from the focus of the pant: the color.

If you tend to have a more conservative sense of style, like the larger group of Hoboken residents, go for a bright-colored capri or trouser in a khaki fabric. Nearly any material goes well with khaki, and if you're wearing them to work, pair your pants with a silk cami and cardigan or embellished cotton tee.

The great thing about wearing bright-colored pants is that you can keep your outfit simple with black or white solid-colored top. To spice it up a bit, throw on a pair of platforms or wedges and a leather bomber jacket. You'll look trendy and conservative, without being plain.

For a more casual approach, try wearing a pair of flats, like Tom's, which are extremely in style now, and a simple white tank.

"Brights are in everywhere this spring; shoes, tanks, skirts, and now pants," said Hoboken resident Caitlin Casey, who added she takes fashion advice from her roommate who sports bright pink pants.

So if you've never owned a pair and secretly want to, you are not alone. You don't need to change your personal style to blend in a bold-colored pair of pants. But if you tend to take a more adventurous approach to trends, then now is a perfect time to take bright-colored pants and balance them with current trends like stripes, animal prints and mix-matching patterns.
