My Stylish Girl Crush
Short t-shirts paired with leggings. Pajamas at 1:30 in the afternoon. Velor sweat suits. High waisted jeans (not the fashionable kind) worn by my anti-social roommate. And of course, the ubiquitous UGG Boots worn with all of the above. College life is awash with all types of "fashion." Yet, one girl rises above the rest. Her name is Caitlin and I have a tremendous girl crush on her.
She has absolutely amazing style and is like a beacon of light helping wayward, hopeful fashionistas find their way. People like myself.
I never was interested in actually getting dressed to go to class. Especially my 10:00am. I know it's not that early, particularly for those of you in the real world. But remember your college days? 10:00am is early and it is hard to get dressed in real-people clothes. I sincerely admire those that can, and Caitlin is one of those individuals. Now, more often than not, I find myself tossing aside the sweatpants for jeans and a cute top because I know that if Caitlin had a 10:00am class, she would too.
Her day to day style is well put together. When it was warmer, she would have a casual sun dress on almost everyday. She would pair candy-colored peep-toe flats with the dresses or gorgeous flirty wedges. When the weather got chillier, she would toss on a fitted cardigan and a delicate scarf. When the weather became even colder, gone were the casual dresses and out came fitted, dark, skinny jeans tucked into flat boots and soft sweaters.
I've only seen her in a few classes over the past few years, and after seeing her day-look, I can only imagine what delightful ensembles she would wear out to the bars. I imagine her a vision in short jewel-colored dresses, sparkly black tights and sleek stiletto peep-toes. Sexy, but never too revealing.
She's classy, if anything, and exudes a simple glamor that I only wish could be bought (though I probably couldn't afford it if it could!). It is surprising that she is still in college and has such a well-developed personal style that isn't burdened by even a touch of laziness.
The best thing about her style is that although nothing is cheap, it is not designer either. She's a real life example of how to look good without dropping serious cash- my fashion idol.
She really has inspired me to put some effort into getting ready in the morning, and now, I find myself looking relatively put together for even my earliest classes (Looking good in my 11:00am Friday class is the biggest accomplishment because Thursday night is definitely a weekend night in college!).
I think the best day was earlier in the year when I saw her walking down the street. She looked like she was prowling the catwalk and her long, blonde hair gently blew away from her face. She looked great, as usual, in one of her signature cotton dresses and peep-toe flats. As I walked past her, her eyes met mine, quickly swept up and down as she gave me the once-over, and she smiled. Perhaps she was just being friendly, but I like to think it was my own flirty summer dress and flats, clearly copied from her, that sparked the grin.
We all have "Caitlins" that flit in and out of our everyday lives. People that we admire because their style is so amazing, yet so effortless. People we wish to emulate. And we can. Just remember, even if you are imitating a personal fashion icon, there are ways to make your style just that- yours. Then maybe you can become a "Caitlin" to someone else. Wouldn't that be fun?!
