Why I shall be up at dawn to watch the royal family in all its bizarre glory

The agreed national line on the royal wedding is: "Good luck to the youngsters, I hope they're happy, but I'm not very interested."

That is what everybody says. The engagement was announced to a roar of benevolent apathy. I have encountered neither republican fervour nor royalist excitement since this whole thing began, only a vague and indifferent goodwill.

I expect there'll be a large audience on Friday, just because it's on TV and most people are off work. There may even be an outbreak of cheerful, faintly ironic street parties. Still, nobody admits really to caring one way or the other.

That is not how I feel. I am extremely excited. I shall be up at dawn (an eventuality rarely achieved without a neighbour's drill) so as not to miss a second of the coverage.

I won't be one of those lightweights tuning in for the service alone. I'll be in the front of the television in my pyjamas hours before the start, demanding to hear canapés and fascinators debated as if they were troop movements in Libya. I want to see diagrams of the route and colour charts anticipating the Queen's hat. I want to be reminded that Kate is travelling from the royal suite of the Goring Hotel with its original 19th-century lavatory by Thomas Crapper. (It was puzzling that the Sun reported this without even attempting a throne joke).

Having said that, I struggle to feel a massive excitement about Kate Middleton herself. It's the main royal family I want to see, gathered in all its bizarre, comical glory. My hunger for them will never be sated.

I want the Queen, tiny and beaming in peach, escorted by the 200-year-old Duke of Edinburgh.

I want Princess Anne, grudgingly buttoned into a skirt suit she's been wearing since 1973.

I want Prince Charles, arriving a careful two minutes after his lesser siblings but five minutes before Her Majesty, in a vintage Bentley tweaked to run on apple juice.

I want Prince Andrew, fivers tumbling out of his back pocket, tricked into attending on the promise that Westminster Abbey has a golf course.

I want Prince Edward, just because it's always hilarious to remember he exists.

How could anyone not be gripped by this roadshow? It's the gift that keeps on giving. I've tried to be a republican but, like trying to drink coffee, I can't make it stick. I was born preferring tea – and biscuits from a tin with the Queen Mother's face on it.

When I hear Colin Firth, a chap whose general sympathies are not unlike mine, revealing that he doesn't support the monarchy, I think: "Come on, Coren! That's where you should stand! Equality for all! Citizenship not subjection!"

But I just can't. Colour and sparkle are too attractive to my magpie gaze, and history is too romantic. I can't blind myself to their appeal. I'd be bored and cross if they were gone.

True, I grew up in a golden age for the royal soap: leaked affairs, tapped phones, endless scandal and shock divorce. This family will loom large for schoolchildren of the future, fat with memorability like Henry VIII. Their private scandals were conducted in parallel with an undeniable sense of public duty: that tension is fascinating, it's operatic. They are just never boring. They're so… not Dutch.

The royal wedding is a rare chance to see them clustered together in one delicious, historical, televised hit. The Windsor safari park in your very own home! How can anyone claim indifference?

My theory was that the bride in the centre just doesn't inspire strong feeling. Kate Middleton is neither a fairytale countess nor a fairytale commoner. She is a bit like us (no title, clothes from Jigsaw) and not at all like us (stunning, super-wealthy, no job), therefore we can neither root for our home girl nor be intrigued by her mysterious aristocracy.

Besides, a nine-year courtship is undramatic, unthrilling. People weren't hooked by the story, I theorised, so they just put it down after a few chapters, much as I did with We Need To Talk About Kevin.

"You're quite wrong," a friend of mine said the other day. "The reason nobody is showing any interest is because we're all so embarrassed by the Diana business."

Speculation over royal wedding dress reaches fever pitch

Kate Middleton favours Sophie Cranston's Libelula, but the label has only been creating wedding dresses since last year. Photograph: Paul Hackett/REUTERS

Will it feature flounce and frills? Will it be a naive Merchant Ivory derivative? Dramatic? Or just plain old dull?

The endless speculation about "the dress" has become a soap opera in itself, with the Middleton family seemingly complicit in the plot by being pictured outside several designer boutiques like a gaggle of kitten-heeled shoplifters.

"It's a national obsession. It's gossip in its purest sense – inoffensive and thrilling," said Kate Reardon, editor of Tatler. "I'm sure they've been teasing us. This couple are presented as being very down to earth and straightforward but they are also the most media savvy young couple on the planet, and they know that this universal not-knowing is delightful."

Fashion commentators remained flummoxed as to whether an expert couture dramatist, a sloaney stalwart or a lo-fi newcomer has won the dress commission of the century. "The fashion industry thrives on being in-the-know first, and this time they really don't know," said Reardon.

Currently, the strongest rumours surround Sophie Cranston, who designs her own small label, Libélula; Sarah Burton, who is head designer at British label Alexander McQueen; and Bruce Oldfield – a designer who can already boast royal credentials.

Jade Beer, acting editor of Brides Magazine, yesterday summed up the designers in contention as "Sophie [Cranston] at one end, occupying the safer and more classic ground; Burton at the fashion forward end of the spectrum and Bruce occupying the middle ground."

Cranston's emergence as front runner has left some in the fashion industry with a furrowed brow. Her name was leaked on the internet last week by the Huffington Post and although St James's Palace is refusing to comment and Cranston has reportedly denied it, the rumour has traction. The 34-year-old won the designer of the year at graduate fashion week in 1999, then went on to work with Alice Temperley before joining Alexander McQueen's design studio – both labels have also been linked to the wedding dress commission.

In 2002 Cranston founded her own label – Libélula – which means dragonfly in Spanish. Middleton is already a fan of her designs, most recently wearing a black velvet dress coat to a friend's wedding in January. Her vintage-inspired aesthetic, which often focuses on 1920s and 1930s styles, has slim, bias-cut silhouettes which flatter narrow frames and seems in keeping with Middleton's style.

"She clearly favours slim-fitting clothes so I'd be surprised to see her in a giant dress," said Reardon.

But others see the commission as a task too great for the fledgling label which has only been creating wedding gowns – which retail at a less-than-regal £800 – since last year.

"The label does its job fantastically well," said Paula Reed, style director of Grazia magazine, "but it will be hard to make an easy-going silhouette work for an abbey setting. When I heard the rumour it brought to mind the barefoot-in-a-barn kind of look. Maybe that's what the couple would love to do but they are getting married in front of the world and that type of silhouette will have a hard time holding its attention. For me there is a big disconnect between a low-key dress and Westminster Abbey."

But Beer disagrees, seeing the choice of Cranston as a brave one. "If it's true it's gutsy to choose a designer who has only been making bridal dresses for a year. It would show enormous confidence in Sophie. Championing a smaller British designer would be a very confident move."

Beer also noted that the rumour of Cranston's commission was not a fait accompli. "My contacts tell me that the Bruce Oldfield rumour is still quite strong within the Middleton camp," she says. Oldfield designs are traditional and favoured by the likes of Barbra Streisand and Sophie Wessex – and he was a favourite of William's late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. His name became connected to the Middleton dress in January after reports that Pippa and Carole Middleton had been seen visiting his boutique. "It does seem unlikely though," said Beer, "he could be doing the mother's dress and it would be unusual to do both mother and bride, so I think not."

Meanwhile the rumour that the commission has gone to Sarah Burton – the discreet and highly regarded creative director at the Alexander McQueen label – is fading. Reports in March that Burton, who was appointed creative director at McQueen shortly after the designer's death, was a contender had the fashion industry salivating.

"I thought 'wow what an enlightened, sophisticated choice' at the time," said Reed. "It would have ticked all the boxes of showcasing British fashion as the whole world was watching. A normal designer with a sparkling CV. But that hope is fading fast."

Bridal Ornaments

The bridal set of ornaments was loaned for the big day, and consisted of the bridal neckwear, the crown and a girdle. As a result, every peasant girl could be regally attired for the special wedding day. The set was probably owned by the parish church, who then rented the regalia to the brides. Another possibility was that it might also have been a family heirloom owned by a farmer in a district. It is interesting to read below that Malene was from a farming family.

The silver-gilt bridal ornament drawing shown left from my 1897 book mentioned below, is described as an ornament typically worn by a Swedish bride. Malene's bodice also appears to have many similar raised discs.

Reader if you know more about similar Norwegian ornamentation please enlighten me. Recently a site visitor called Sue did just that and I have added a note about her solje here.

Sue's Sølje

Sue a site visitor wrote to me "I am of Norwegian and Swedish heritage. I have an interesting note regarding the Norwegian solje. I purchased one from a Scandinavian shop back in the 1970’s. Mine has a crown on top of a heart, with 3 rows of smaller hearts attached to it with the golden spoon shaped drops hanging from each little heart.

Norwegian Bride Close-up of 1883 Bodice

This 1883 antique photo shows a close-up of the bride Malene wearing what looks like a European style of jacket. The skirt appears to flow dirndl fashion rather than bustle panelled. However, her costume has styling elements suggestive of the Scandinavian region.

The decorative elements on the jacket remind me of similar pattern grids used by peasants throughout Europe. Norway, Shetland, Fair Isle, the Balkans, Ukraine and Finland all have traditional knitwear and embroidery featuring related motifs.

My lack of expertise in the field of Norwegian folk dress means I cannot tell if the ornamentation is part of the jacket or a separate ornament.

I suspect it is a huge ornamental detachable metal collar much like mayoral neckwear, or a small detachable shawl collar cape embedded with disc like metal brooches, since it does appear that Malene is wearing a traditional bunad blouse visible at the neckline beneath her jacket. After all, this was a winter wedding in January, and the weather at this latitude may well have demanded a heavy jacket, so it would be natural to cover up a thinner blouse.

A similar Bergen styled outfit immediate right was shown at the International Exhibition/Great London Exposition of 1862. The exposition featured over 28,000 exhibitors from 36 countries and was held just a decade after the very successful Great Exhibition of 1851, also at Kensington, London.

The Norwegian court sent on the jacket remind mea they wanted to show the splendour of wedding attire of their peoples. This drawing is of the peasant bride representation from the exhibition, and shows how a Bergen bride might look when dressed for her nuptials.

Notice how the bodice decoration of the 1862 image right is more in line with the bodice of the costume in the old photograph shown above, than the drawing of 50 years later shown below. Similar bridal decorations are on display in a Copenhagen museum.

Wedding Expenses

Marrying outside of a church or the local registry office is not the cheapest option.

In fact, costs are likely to be higher as extra fees are demanded since the registrar will have to travel to an out of town venue such as a remote country hotel. Despite reading that ordinary people frequently spend £20,000 on a wedding, you can actually get married in UK for very little - the cheapest fees are likely to be approximately £100 for a register office ceremony or about £300 for the alternative Church fees ceremony.

But of course very few people dash along to the register office or church as if it was an ordinary day. Without some other expenditure that marks the day as special, as an event of note, most couples do not simply go through the motions of a ceremony to get the certificate proof of marriage. It is indeed a special day and for many people their wedding day is one of the happiest days of their life.

»

The whole point of a wedding is the word ceremony - which highlights the participants involvement in making vows and promises for an adventure together, hopefully for a life partnership. The whole concept of marriage is imbued with optimism, selflessness, compromise, comfort and hope for building a future of happiness by sharing joint adventures and ideas. So as this concept must be celebrated, so then the costs start to add on as the dressing up, eating, drinking, partying and recording of the event are all are added to the accounts.

You can find plenty of wedding websites that cover wedding preparation information. My best advice is stick closely to your budget and don't be too swayed by glossy magazines and websites that suggest you must have everything everyone else has. By all means read the advice, but filter out what is frankly often unnecessary expenditure.

Do you really need the caterers to the stars to make your wedding cake at £1000+? Be realistic, will it really make that much difference and make you happier in the greater scheme of things if the person who made and decorated the cake for Posh, Madonna or Prince Charles can make your cake. You could even make it yourself as I made mine from my cake recipe here.

The more interesting venues accommodate those who want somewhere special for their big day, but find that a church wedding is meaningless to them. There are others who would like the special feel of a church wedding compared to a registry office, but realise that third time round a church or chapel wedding might seem hypocritical.

Now those who want a more glamorous alternative to a civil registry office wedding can choose to have a formal wedding, but in surroundings more special than a Registry office at the back of the town. Now in UK it is possible to have the wedding ceremony and the wedding reception in one attractive building and one where guests often gather for one or two overnight stays.

With the exception of Quaker and Jewish ceremonies, in England and Wales it is only possible to get married in daylight hours between 8 am and 6pm. This is because an 'ancient' law states that there must be enough daylight for a man and woman to see the person they are about to marry. If a couple choose to marry in a civil ceremony in a Register Office then the hours are even more reduced to between 10am and 4pm in the week and to midday on Saturday. This means that in the UK it is more customary to marry by lunchtime and have a wedding reception in the afternoon. In many cases a second reception is held with evening entertainment varying from a disco to a barn dance.

As the new laws for venue licence properties came into effect so more and more people have begun to opt for a ceremony after 3pm so the wedding can take them into an early evening affair. One of the first royal weddings to do this was that of Sophie Rhys Jones and H.R.H Prince Edward. They married after 5pm at the last possible hour of the day. Guests were told not to wear hats. Most guests chose to wear evening dress for what was technically an evening function. As the new century approached new rules were emerging in weddings in England and Wales.

A Red Wedding Dress

In 1999, as the millennium beckoned the last decade of the century saw not only a change in wedding pattern styles, but also a fashion trend for adding more and more colour to the bride's wedding dress.

Wendy's red wedding dress is a statement of her modern approach. It illustrates her confidence to go against tradition at a time (1999), when coloured dresses were still only worn by a few western brides in UK. Despite this many other nationalities consider that the best colour to marry in is red. Brides in both India and China like to marry in red.

White wedding dresses have been worn in Britain since Queen Victoria a young virginal bride married in white. Until then and even after, many brides simply bought a quality dress in a neutral colour such as creamy beige so that they could wear the dress again and again. Others picked materials like silver lame which could enable a dress to be restyled into an evening gown. Often a woman would have two bodices made - one which was demure in cut for the wedding ceremony and one for future evening wear.

However in the fifty years post world War II as society became more affluent and modern fabrics brought affordable white gowns, brides mostly opted for a white wedding.

Now in the mid noughties decade, a coloured wedding dress is a very popular choice for many brides, with red wedding dresses being hot sellers.

1999 Coloured Fashions in Bridal Wear

Paul and Wendy decided they wanted a wedding with elements of both the traditional and the modern.

They were very much inspired by a joint visit to India that they had taken before they married. Paul and Wendy became engaged whilst travelling hippie-like in India.

The wedding itself was a civil wedding service held at Stow-Cum-Quy, Cambridge, England.

As you can see, the photographs were taken against weeping willows. At their wedding Paul and Wendy chose to add hippy inspired elements to their fairly formal wedding dress along with colourful flowers.

As the 1990s had progressed many younger brides selected tied flowers over formal bridal sprays. Formal bridal sprays gained new popularity in the 1960s.

Sometimes modern bridal flowers were tied in a natural way with raffia strands or bound with long exotic shiny leaves. At other times colourful ribbons added character. Wendy chose dramatic colours to enhance her dress, a very different look to white roses, pastel orchids or arum lilies.

Wendy chose a red wedding gown and completed the modern approach with a Bindi on her forehead, but did not have her hands done Mehndi style with henna.

Wedding Gowns

For many women, a wedding dress will be the most elaborate and expensive thing they will ever wear -- the crowning glory of a day that will pass in a blur of adrenaline and joy.

And then what?

Josie Daga's Janell Berté gown, for which she paid $3,000 in 1999, arrived home after the wedding, cleaned and preserved, in a three-foot-by-four-foot box. "You can't fit it under the bed or in a closet, and I thought the reality of my daughter ever wanting to wear my dress is pretty slim," says Ms. Daga, who is 38.

She listed the dress in 2004 on Craigslist, where she received a few $200 bids and a lot of offers that she suspected were scams. On EBay, ditto. In consignment shops, nada. So she did what an enterprising young advertising executive does -- she launched a Web site, PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com, and sold her dress for $800. A year later, she had 400 listings, with each seller paying a minimum $25 fee, and soon afterward, running the Web site became her full-time occupation. Today, PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com has about 2,360 gowns listed.

Boosting its business these days are brides on a budget. There are 2.2 million weddings each year in the U.S., according to Brides Magazine. While their cost on average in recessionary 2008 was a still-high $22,000, that was down roughly 20% from 2007. Disc jockeys, photographers and videographers are being hit hard as brides opt for iPods and friends with cameras.

Emotionally, it can be hard to downsize a wedding-dress dream. Some women justify the purchase of an expensive gown by planning to resell it. Sally Lorensen Conant, owner of Orange Restoration Labs in Orange, Conn., says fewer brides want to have their gowns preserved these days. "I'm seeing more women who say, 'I just want you to clean the dress. I'm going to try to sell it,' " she says.

It's a risky maneuver. A gown isn't a financial investment. It can take months or even a year to sell a gown, and the returns are comparable to those of selling a used car. Transaction details must be negotiated. That includes not only payment but, if the dress isn't being mailed, where to meet and try on the dress. One seller I interviewed arranged to meet a potential buyer at her dry cleaner, which felt safer than inviting a stranger into her home.

I have dutifully carted my silk Priscilla of Boston gown through six moves and 18 years of marriage. I am not alone; closets across America are hiding fancy gowns of silk, tulle and French lace amassed in the 30 years or so since the wedding industry became a juggernaut.

Now, the combined forces of the Web and the recession are bringing many of those dresses out again. As online venues for selling dresses proliferate, wedding planners and other specialists say that they're seeing more brides selling their dresses.

Dressing In Style with Cheap Teen Clothing

What do you think about affordable teenage fashion clothes? Cheap teen clothing? Am I kidding? Nope. In fact, it's a hot trend! This certainly brings a sigh of relief from many a parent.

Discounts are "IN"

Just a few years ago, teens were into the latest fashion designs and expensive ones at that. Perhaps due, in part, to the fact that most parents simply can no longer shell out gobs of money for teen's clothing, teenagers decided to take matters into their own hands. Necessity is the mother of invention, after all.

A Fashion Trend in a Cheap Way with Retro

While the retro trend has been underway for quite a while, this became a hot trend with the avant garde faction of teens first. Teens who were into a more individualistic style went for retro in a big way. Making their own fashion statement became one way of thumbing their collective noses at the fashion runways of the world.

Now, almost every teen is in to the retro scene, with at least a couple of complete retro costumes. Naturally, this formerly cheap teen clothing marketers began raising their prices. Still, the retro fashions are still relatively inexpensive when compared with department store goods.

How to Dress Like a Female Hottie

Now, that leading edge of teen fashionistas has really gotten into cheap teen clothing that is as inexpensive as it is hot! Where do these teen fashion queens shop? At the thrift and consignment shops, of course! It's unlikely that the Salvation Army or Goodwill clothing shops are going to start competing with the department stores by raising prices.

While some of the more 'upscale' consignment shops have been raising their prices a tad, due to the popularity of this cheap teen clothing, the thrift shops are a virtual gold mine for the fashionable teen.

Now You Can Wear More Fashion Outfits for Less

Imagine how many clothes a teen can accumulate shopping the thrift shops! While a good quality wool winter coat of a classic design might go for $200 at the mall, a teen might, at the right place and time, find a full length leather coat in beautiful condition for $10!

Mix and Match the 80s with the 50s for a Fab Look

Another factor that's changing the teen fashion scene is that the thrift and consignment shops get clothing items that span decades of fashion. A 60s skirt can be teamed up with a 50s sweater and worn with a coat from the 80s. You can't get more individualistic, read 'trendy', than that.

Buying Clothes from the Factory Outlets

Another cheap teen clothing resource is the factory outlet store. Here, teens can find everything from stockings to designer shoes and clothing at heavily discounted prices. These items are considered seconds, with minor flaws in the evenness of stitching or some such thing which can't be seen with the naked eye.

Nonetheless, the garment or show can no longer be sold as the genuine article. The store cuts the designer label out, so as not to sully their reputation. While some adults may view this practice as slightly gauche on the part of the designer, teens view this badge of cheap teen clothing as an asset. It makes the clothes and complete designer outfits that much cooler.

Captivating Results of the Right Dresses and Support for Tall Teens

If you are one of the multitude of tall teens in the country then these facts will speak directly to you. All taller girls are not high fashion models posing for NYC photographers and having their pictures posted on the covers of popular magazines. No, many tall females are uncomfortable with their situation, especially when it comes to buying dresses or other fashion outfits. What to wear? Here is some insight.

Support Your Tall Teenager

While teenagers often try to express their individuality through fashion, hobbies, and music, the truth is that they want to be accepted. No teen wants to be isolated from their peers or made fun of for being too different. Unfortunately, physical appearance can be one factor that have a big effect on a teen’s life.

Standing out can invite teasing and torment, and even the most well adjusted teen can suffer as a result. Being overweight or too scrawny can invite teasing, as can being the wrong build or height. In fact, tall teens can often struggle with their body image.

Look Yonder but Don't Look Here

We’ve all heard the teasing afforded to tall people. Beanpole, giraffe, and so on. As cruel as it is, people like to point out others’ differences in order to make themselves feel better. Tall teens can often end up on the wrong side of this mockery.

Being a tall teen girl can make it difficult to hide away, as much as they’d want to. Unfortunately, their height makes them an easy target. However, there are some things you can do to support your tall teen.

Clothes that Fit and Look Good

Ensure that your teen is able to dress in a way that makes them comfortable. Very tall teens may struggle to get clothes that fit, so take them shopping to stores that will stock clothes to fit. Dressing the way they want to can help improve the way your tall teen feels about their height.

Be Part of the Solution in Fashion and in Life

In addition, don’t give too much emphasis to your teen’s height. If you’re tall yourself, there’s no doubt that you know it. While you should teach your teen to love their body and the benefits of their height, don’t focus on it too much. By constantly drawing attention to their height, you’ll only make them feel self-conscious and embarrassed.

Many Taller Girls Make Good Athletes

While it seems obvious, one thing you can do is encourage your teen to participate in sports that celebrate height.

Basketball is one of the first sports that comes to mind, but there are many sports where a taller teen will be able to excel. Your teen will be able to see the different benefits related to being tall. Not only that, but they will likely be around other teens of a similar height and build. This will help them feel more normal about their height, and more accepting of themselves.

Step Back in Time with Your Retro Poodle Skirts

Ever thought of modeling a retro pLinkoodle skirt for your portfolio? Okay, maybe you are not even a model but just a girl who wants something a little different to add to your outfit collection. Here is a fashion fad to consider.

Retro fashions in your wardrobe may well be some of the most individualistic pieces in your closet. After all, almost everyone else is wearing a modern costume, which you’ll see on a dozen different people walking down the street.

Even though retro and other 50s style fashions have already been on the scene before, in decades past, people tend to forget these old styles. Retro fashions garner a second look today, because they are now a fresh look once again, fifty years later. One such classic is the 1950s vintage Poodle skirt. In the 1950s, every girl had one, generally worn to a sock hop

Shopping for a Party Dress

The event is coming up soon and you don't know what to wear. Do you go for the wild and free or wear the formal gown? Shopping for a party dress shouldn't be such an ordeal as you will understand in a few moments. Read the tips before you buy.

All of us are not high fashion models who have a personal designer tell us what to wear and some lucky women have that innate seLinknse of fashion flair. It seems that such women have no problem picking the absolute perfect clothing, no matter what the occasion.

Don't get too upset if current fashion trends is not your thing. Most of us unfortunately fall into the second category. Shopping for new outfits can become a chore when it takes three hours to find an outfit that you think you like.

For important fashion events like parties, this can be a particularly trying shopping trip. If you've been invited to a party and are agonizing over just how to attract the attentions of that hot guy from the office, here are some tips to make your party dress a hot number.

The dress should fit the party

First, consider the party. Is it a sit-down dinner affair? Is the party being held at a club, with plenty of dancing afoot? Is it a sorority event with an abundance of wild costumes or more casual wear? Each of these events requires a different take on your party dress.

The sit-down dinner is usually a more formal event. Although there may be dancing, it is probably not gong to include hard rock or country music choices. More like pop or ballroom stuff. More mingling of the cocktail party style.

Your party dress choice should suit this mood. A long flowing party dress or gown of a more conservative styling is your starting point. This doesn't mean it can't be hot. Think graceful and alluring, while not being overtly revealing.

The nightclub event

If you're clubbing, your party dress will be put through its paces. A shorter gown is more practical and in keeping with the main activity of dancing all night long. Glitter and sparkle go a long way here. This party garment can be more radical than one suited to the sit-down dinner. Party shoes with lights or ribbons spiraling up your legs are great additions to this costume.

Wet and wild without the wet

How about the sorority party where wild and outrageous outfits are perfectly acceptable? You can go with something like the club number or stand out from the crowd of radicals with a little black dress with some radical jewelry, other accessories and a truly outstanding hat.

For example, a wide-brimmed hat rimmed with silk flowers gives you a mysterious look that men find alluring, making them curious to find out more about you. The understated black dress can upstage the competition big time.

Your dress may be too much!

If the sorority event is a casual event, don't overdo it. This party dress should be simple, casual but elegant. A pure silk dress of a single color, paired with platforms of a plain design, should do the trick. Some types of publicity are not good so fade a bit.

Made To Measure Bridal Gowns

Are you thinking of having your wedding gown made to measure, but not really sure about what’s involved? Can a couturier really create your perfect gown exactly as you desire?

Lisa Merton from Culture Shock Bridal and Eveningwear guides us through the “Bridal Couture” process, and explains your options.

Why Choose Couture?
Choosing what you will wear on your wedding day has a huge impact on the look and style of your whole wedding. Many girls dream about their ideal gowns long before they have even met their future partners, whilst others like to shop around and try on lots of different styles to help them reach their decision. Photos from bridal magazines and other peoples’ weddings can be a great source of inspiration and can make your search a lot easier, but sometimes no matter how hard you look, you just cannot find the perfect dress for your big day. This is when you need a couturier to create a dress that is designed and made specifically for you!

The term “couture” simply means “made to measure”, and a “couturier” is a professional who can design, source the fabric, patternmake, cut and sew a gown to your exact measurements, incorporating all the requirements you need (budget, style, colour, fabrics, trimmings, etc). Couturiers specialize in their own signature style, and with a bit of research you can find one whose style appeals to you. Most couturiers adapt and make up their own designs for you, whilst others are happy to work to your design, or a mutually satisfying mix of both. (Note- most couturiers will not copy someone else’s work….if you simply want to copy a picture, then what you need is a dressmaker, not a couturier.)

Some of the many advantages of working with a couturier are:

  • Getting Exactly What You Want
every detail is approved by you, and if you want to change a detail such as sleeves, neckline, etc, you can!

  • Perfect fit
no matter what size and shape you are, your couture gown should fit you perfectly

  • High quality
in design, fabrics, trims, fitting, workmanship and most importantly, personal service

  • Individuality
a unique one off design that can truly be called your own

  • Co-ordination
couturiers can design outfits for your entire bridal party, from flowergirls and bridesmaids through to the mother of the bride and groom

  • Flexibility
throughout the making process, adjustments can be made to improve the fit and look of the gown, and most couturiers are also flexible with appointment times to suit your busy lifestyle

The process of having your gown made to measure by a couturier is time-consuming but well worth the effort. The gown needs to be constructed over a period of time with several key stages as I will explain below. Of course, all couturiers have their own special ways of working, but in general here is a step by step guide:

1. Timeframe
A couture wedding gown can take anywhere from 3 to 12 months to make, depending on how busy the couturier is and how far in advance they require a booking. Exclusive imported fabrics can take months to order in, and delicate hand-work such as beading and embroidery is very time-consuming. In general, you should start looking around as soon as you can, and allow at least 6 to 8 months wherever possible. Smaller couturiers could make a wedding gown in 3 months, but larger businesses will need more time to co-ordinate their orders.

CAN’T FIND THE RIGHT WEDDING DRESS TO SUIT MY FIGURE

What do you do when you’ve tried on many wedding dresses, but can’t seem to find “The One”? If you’re tall and slim, well you could wear just about anything, and look great. It’s not so easy though when you’re a bit shorter, hourglass shaped, or even pear shaped. Not to mention being over a size 16, now that’s a challenge.

The way to tackle this is by first establishing tLinkhe best silhouette for your figure. I will outline the best design options for different figure shapes, with the aim of helping brides who are not a standard size (in my opinion, that’s about 90% of us!)

Hourglass shape: This is where the bust and hips are in proportion, and there is a defined waistline. Typically a girl who is hourglass shaped is a size 14 or over, with a full bust and shapely hips. Contrary to popular opinion, girls of this shape are very often paranoid of their bust and would love to reduce its size! Also of concern are the shapely hips. Girls, I have great news for you! The majority of styles look great on hourglass figures, provided you stick to a few basic rules.

DO wear strapless gowns, they look fantastic on shapely girls! You will obviously need extra support in the bust area, but it is worth the effort. The best look is strapless at the neckline, with an A-line skirt. Also a straight-through gown is best, as opposed to a two-piece gown. The two-piece will tend to cut you in half, which can accentuate the hourglass shape.

If you’re not keen on strapless, a V-neckline is extremely flattering on a full bust. The V-shape should be fairly low (as low as you’re comfortable with), as a higher neckline actually makes the bust appear even bigger. A particularly flattering look is an off-the-shoulder V-neckline. A scooped, off-the-shoulder neckline is also very appealing.

The best silhouette for the skirt of the dress is A-line, and can be quite full. As for whether you should have a train at the back or not, that is a matter of choice.

The current styles which have lots of draping or ruching on them, are an excellent choice for an hourglass-shaped bride. Despite what many may think, draping is very good at disguising the not-so-good bits, which we all want to hide.

DON’T go for straight or bias-cut designs! They are strictly for the tall, slim, or generally size 10 girls. The only case in which these designs would work on an hourglass figure is if the girl is reasonably tall. I recently made a bias-cut cowl neck wedding dress for a size 14 girl, who was about 5 ‘ 11” tall, and the style worked really well on her. But on the whole, bias cuts are a no-no for shapely girls. They are too clingy and will only accentuate the parts that you would rather hide.

Also, avoid gathered or pleated skirts, as they add bulk around the hips.

Pear-shaped figure: Similar rules apply as the hourglass shape. The idea here is to balance the top half with the bottom half of the body.

DO wear strapless and A-line gowns, as they are an excellent choice for a pear-shaped girl. The off-the-shoulder scooped or V-neckline is also a very good choice, with an A-line skirt, as it helps to balance the figure. Two-piece gowns are a good choice for this figure shape, as the bust is smaller than the hips. You can have quite an elaborate corset bodice with an A-line skirt, and it creates the illusion that the figure is in proportion. I know this sounds odd, but it really works!

As with the hourglass figure shape, pear-shaped girls can certainly wear gowns with draping and ruching, provided it is with an A-line skirt silhouette. The best draping option here is diagonal draping as it is the most flattering. Go for detailing in the bodice, as it will serve as the focus of the dress.

DON’T choose straight or bias-cut designs. They look awful on a pear-shaped girl, no exceptions! Even tall pear-shaped girls should steer clear of bias-cuts and straight designs, as they simply cannot hide your hips.

Also, stay away from halter-neck gowns as this design actually gives the appearance of even bigger hips. Steer clear of full gathered or pleated skirts as well, as this look adds bulk to the hips.
